BoomTown: Chapter 9 – ‘Behind The Mask’

10th – 13th August 2017

Entering Chapter 8, we picked up from the cliff hanger of Chapter 7, where Comrade Jose, Boomtown’s once much loved leader had been seduced by power; her greed manifested in the creation of the mighty Bang Hai Palace and whispers of revolt on her streets turned to declaration when The Masked Man took control of her new beacon of power and laid the foundation for Chapter 8’s Revolution…

With a storyline that has been evolving since the very first chapter, theatrics are at the very heart of BoomTown. Chapter 8 was the mostfully immersive in the festivals’ history; with additional funding support from Arts Council England, the multiple theatrical takeovers playedout pivotal parts of the story citywide and hundreds of actors were dispersed throughout the interactive streets to fully inspire each of boomtown’s ‘citizens’ to ‘Be Part of the Story’…  The attention to detail, no matter how small, throughout the nine fully themed districtstransported all in attendance into BoomTown’s alternative reality and the sheer scale and production of the brand new Sector 6, left all many wide eyed and open mouthed. Friday’s opening show saw the story unfold centre stage, with revolutionaries flying in on zip wires and pyrotechnics going off from all angles! The over in Barrio Loco, in a bid to regain control of her city, Comrade Jose held the BoomTownGames circus battles, pitting infamous Barrio gangs against each other in a tactic to divide and rule and in OldTown, The Invisible Circusstormed The Jolly Dodger Pirate Ship with Revolutionaries fighting to regain control of the port. By Sunday, the only stage left for the revolutionaries to conquer was the central hub of The Town Centre. As headliner Parov Stelar’s last note rang out, The Masked Man struck the deadliest final blow, stealth revolutionaries descended on abseils and stormed the stage. The Revolutionaries had won and each corner of the city appeared to be back in the hands of the citizens, and four magical days ended in a true BoomTown spectacle and breath-taking show!

Mind bending musicianship was curated to perfection with Madness welcoming a full capacity crowd at the Lion’s Den of 20,000 on Saturday night and Damian Marley closing the Uk’s biggest reggae stage with one of the most memorable performances. Daytime shenanigans throughout the festival came in all forms, and one of the most talked about and attended of which was undoubtedly Mr Motivator who’s sweat inducing workouts energised and delighted across the generations. Sunday’s Hippy Highway pillow fight allowed everyone’s inner child to let loose, whilst those in search of discussion and reflection headed to the newly expanded Whistler’s Green; home to KidzTown, new funk and soul stage, The Windmill and the first edition of Speakers’ Corneexceeded expectations in its’ popularity with education and open debate at the heart of each insightful offering.

What does all this mean Chapter 9: Behind The Mask? Only time will tell…
